To the Greater Fort Erie Youth Soccer Community,

First and foremost, the Greater Fort Erie Youth Soccer Club (“GFEYSC”) hopes that all members and their families are healthy and safe. The evolving and unique circumstances regarding COVID-19 have required the GFEYSC Executive Board to review its soccer operations and activities for the summer of 2020. After careful consideration, the board has made the difficult decision to cancel our normal summer soccer program effective June 23, 2020.

Your executive board has not entered into this decision lightly. For the past four months, we have been closely monitoring the advice of our local/national health policy makers as well as the guidance from our governing soccer bodies and unanimously agree that the health risks associated with running even a shortened soccer season at this time are simply too high. We appreciate and understand that this will cause disappointment to our players, but we are committed to the safety of the Greater Fort Erie communities. Soccer is a contact sport and it is our opinion that trying to manage an effective season with our infrastructure while balancing all social distancing and established COVID-19 safety protocols is simply unrealistic.

We contacted several other local clubs and learned that a number of our counterparts had also looked at options but decided to cancel their seasons with health concerns being of paramount importance. Soccer is one of the heartbeat sports in our community, so your executive board wanted to exhaust all possible options before making this decision. When we are ready to hit the fields again in 2021, we expect to implement new directives from the Canadian Soccer and Ontario Soccer Associations that will result in a new look and feel in order to help keep everyone safe.

Regarding the 2021 travel season, we ask that you email the club with your child’s intention to play next season so that they can be added to the Travel Wait List at no cost. This will allow us to plan for the upcoming fall/winter season. We are committed to providing an evaluation process for selection that is as close to our normal policies as possible and will try to ensure that all players are considered.

For those who have already registered for the 2020 outdoor season, the GFEYSC will be issuing either a full refund or credit that can be applied towards any future soccer activity within the club. For those who would like a refund, please email the GFEYSC at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. In the email, please include the name of registered player(s), provide an updated mailing address (if it has changed) and will we mail you a cheque. The deadline for a refund request is July 31, 2020. Due to the high volume of registrants, we will need some time to process these requests and appreciate your patience. If no refund is request is received by July 31, 2020, your account will automatically be credited.

We would like to thank the coaches, players, families and sponsors who have already invested time and energy into the 2020 pre-season and encourage everyone in both competitive and house-league streams to get out and enjoy soccer in a safe way until our club can re-unite. While it is deeply disappointing that we will not be able to enjoy the sport of soccer together as soon as we would like, please be reminded that the club is still here to support our valued membership. We will continue to share resources to allow you to fine-tune your skills until we can play the beautiful game together again. We trust that you are in this with us, as we make this difficult decision in an effort to protect our children as well as those deemed most vulnerable in our community. Please continue to monitor our website and social media pages for new information in the coming weeks.  We will be diligent in our efforts to get back to soccer activities as soon as possible and have no doubt that soccer in our community will come back stronger than ever! Should we have the opportunity to provide some kind of short-term or specialized soccer activities before the end of summer in a way that is safe for our membership, we will certainly evaluate it.
